Seasons Cafe

Completion: Fall 2006

The project began with the Owner's vision for an upscale bistro that would evolve its flavors and image with nature's changing seasons.  The design centers on this idea by using lighting techniques along with a transformation and progression of materials to express this ongoing evolution.   Folding planes are used to delineate the spaces while expressing a sense of continuity within the small dining and bar areas.  The wood from the floor plane transforms into the wall systems, ultimately connecting the wine bar surface upwards with the ceiling plane and floating lighting soffit above.  The recessed seating areas are further extensions and permanent reflections of this transformation of materials.   The natural materials centered on the use of mahogany accented with an interior brick masonry wall that separates the public and private zones. The illuminated light wall allows the owner to change the color and ambiance during major seasonal changes, signifying a change in menu and celebrating nature's cycle.  The small square footage of the space and a limited budget helped to guide the design team's programmatic and material decisions.  Both aspects were maximized with critical detailing of the simple yet effective design that culminates in the overall experience.
