26 Market Square

Client: Jamie Henderlight
Location: Knoxville, Tennessee
Size: 5,000 Square Feet
Completion: Spring 2008

This project located in the heart of market square in downtown Knoxville celebrates the restoration and preservation of a once blighted and unusable structure. This highly visible property has been transformed and reintroduced as a vibrant and contributing structure to Knoxville's most popular pedestrian gathering space and embodies the spirit of our most important Historic District.

The restoration of major original historic elements that had been previously absent from the façade due to non compliant and detrimental renovation efforts from previous owners include the reintroduction of a luxfir prism transom, brick detailing at the cornice and at the column capitals, and period accurate wood framed glazing systems. These restoration efforts combine with the preservation of the original inlaid terrazzo entry, exposed interior brick masonry walls and the period-applied cementitious stucco system. The effort also restores the original intent of mixed occupancy uses for the spaces within the structure, with a mercantile use serving the ground floor and a residential use on the upper level.
